Frequently Asked Questions

Group therapy is generally a safe and effective form of psychological support when facilitated by experienced and appropriately qualified therapists. Like any therapeutic approach, however, it may not be the right fit for everyone at every stage of their journey.

Being part of a group means hearing other people's experiences as well as exploring your own. At times, conversations may feel emotional, challenging or thought-provoking. At Thrive Together, we don't see these moments as something to avoid. Instead, we understand them as opportunities to deepen self-awareness and reflect on our experiences within the safety of a supportive group.

No one is ever expected to share more than they feel comfortable with. Our facilitators work carefully to create an atmosphere of warmth, respect and emotional safety where every member can participate at their own pace.

Group dynamics are the natural relationships, interactions and patterns that develop between members as a group begins to know one another.

At Thrive Together, we believe we often come to understand ourselves through our relationships with other people. As trust develops, group members begin to notice how they communicate, how they respond to others, the roles they naturally take on, and what emotions emerge within relationships.

These experiences are never judged or analysed in isolation. Instead, they become opportunities for reflection, greater self-awareness and personal growth. Often, the most meaningful insights come not from advice, but from genuinely encountering another person's perspective and recognising something of yourself within it.

Group therapy can be helpful for a wide range of emotional, psychological and relational challenges. It offers a supportive environment where people can reflect on their experiences, learn from others and discover they are not alone in what they are facing.

People often attend group therapy to explore:

  • Anxiety, stress and overwhelm.
  • Depression and low mood.
  • Grief and loss.
  • Relationship difficulties.
  • Low self-esteem and confidence.
  • Loneliness and isolation.
  • Life transitions and change.
  • Personal growth and self-understanding.

Every person's reason for attending is different. While we may share similar struggles, each of us brings our own unique story, values and experiences.

The purpose of group therapy is not simply to talk about problems. It is to create a safe, professionally facilitated environment where people can better understand themselves through honest conversation and meaningful relationships with others.

Unlike individual therapy, group therapy offers the opportunity to hear different perspectives, experience genuine connection and discover that many of life's struggles are shared.

At Thrive Together, we believe there is something profoundly reassuring about hearing another person describe an experience you thought only you had. Those moments of recognition often reduce feelings of isolation and create space for greater understanding, self-compassion and growth.

Research consistently shows that group therapy can be highly effective for many emotional and mental health concerns. For some people, it can be just as beneficial as individual therapy, particularly in reducing feelings of isolation, improving relationships and increasing self-awareness.

At Thrive Together, we believe the effectiveness of group therapy comes not only from professional facilitation but also from the relationships that develop within the group itself. As trust grows, members often discover new ways of understanding themselves and relating to others.

Meaningful change often happens not because someone tells us what to do, but because we encounter ourselves differently through our relationships with other people.

The size of a therapy group can vary depending on its purpose, but we intentionally keep our groups small, with no more than 10 participants.

We believe meaningful conversations happen when everyone has enough space to be heard, recognised and remembered.

Smaller groups allow trust to develop more naturally, encourage deeper dialogue and help create an environment where people feel comfortable contributing in their own way.

No.

There is never any pressure to speak before you feel ready.

Some people contribute from the very first session, while others prefer to spend time listening, observing and getting to know the group before sharing more of themselves.

Both approaches are completely welcome.

We believe that simply being present can be an important part of the process. As trust develops, many people naturally find their voice and begin contributing in a way that feels authentic to them.

At Thrive Together, we don't believe people need to be fixed.

We believe every person has a unique story shaped by their relationships, experiences and the choices they have faced throughout life.

Our groups are grounded in an existential-analytic approach, which means we are interested in understanding each person's experience rather than offering quick solutions or simple answers.

Our facilitators create a warm, thoughtful and professionally held environment where people can explore life's questions together. Through genuine dialogue, respectful relationships and shared reflection, many people leave feeling more connected to themselves, more understanding of others and less alone in the challenges they face.

Because while every person's journey is unique, we rarely have to walk it entirely on our own.
